Each year 600 to 800 bike commuters die on the road. That number has been fluctuating for the past several decades.
But roads are becoming more dangerous. 2016 was the deadliest year for bikers on record, with 840 cyclist fatalities. That means on average 2 cyclists die every day just trying to make their morning commute.
That’s not okay.
Biking shouldn’t be dangerous. Biking could be a preventative tactic for many major diseases. Biking offers loads of health benefits that nearly everyone can enjoy. And it’s easy to put in place in our existing society.
It could have an amazing impact on our environment. But if people won’t ride bikes because of their safety, we’re losing out on all these benefits.
But we also want to make an app for that.
Cars are Smarter – and We Can Use That
Most smart cars now come equipped with safety technology. It lets a driver know when they’re getting too close to the middle lane. The car will beep if an object is in the path. Often, the car will even stop itself or autocorrect to a safer course.
Now, what if we could tap into that technology with an app designed to keep bikers safe on the road?
Here’s How It Would Work
All drivers and bikers will download the SAFETe BIKERapp. With location preferences turned on, a biker continues about their usual commute. All drivers on the road with the SAFETe BIKERapp will get heads up about nearby bikers.
The app will notify the driver when they’re within 50 yards of a biker. Should the driver get too close, the app will engage the car’s built-in safety features and put the car on a safer course.
If a vehicle doesn’t have built-in safety technology, the app will beep as the driver gets too close to a biker.
We think this could transform biking safety and save hundreds of lives every year.
Government and Insurance Companies Could Support This
We’d love for you to encourage your officials to support this as part of our Biking for Unity Platform. We’d love to see governments offer tax benefits for drivers and bikers who use this app to improve our road’s safety.
Insurance companies can support people’s safety too. They can offer discounted rates for drivers who regularly use the app.
We imagine companies like The Penny Hoarder will include the SAFETe BIKERapp on a ways to save money list.
Let us know what other perks and benefits you want to see in the app! What other features would be helpful?
Keep an Eye Out for Progress
We’re excited to create and launch SAFETe BIKERapp, and we’ll post regular updates as we make progress. We may even offer beta testing when the first rounds go live.
So let us know what you think! Give us your ideas and find out how you can support this project by contacting us here.
