Victorians thought by now we would be able to walk on the water with balloon power. The same photo also shows a guy biking on the water on, maybe, a unicycle?
So while we’re still trying to figure out this epic balloon travel, biking on the water isn’t such an insane concept.
In fact, it exists. And we love it. Introducing the Shuttle Bike.
The Shuttle Bike isn’t like a pedal boat – it works with the bike you already own. In 15 minutes or less, you’re biking on water.
The Shuttle Bike comes with two pontoons you inflate with pedal power. Then the pontoons attach to your bike, and you can bike off again, right onto the water. You can see how it works here.
There’s no learning curve – you control the pontoon/bike/boat the exact way you ride your bike. In fact, it’s arguably easier, as you don’t have to maintain your balance either.
So here are the top five reasons why we love the Shuttle Bike.
First, How Does it Work?
The Initial Set Up
When you receive your Shuttle Bike Kit, there’s an initial set up. You attach a few inconspicuous rings to your bike. These stay fixed in place to make set up quick and easy when you’re ready to hit the water.
Inflating the Pontoons
The entire Shuttle Bike kit fits into a backpack with a series of interconnecting poles.
Use the poles to lift the back tire off the ground and connect it to a pump. Pedal your bike to inflate the inner back up pontoon, and the outer pontoon on each side.
Piecing it Together
It may take some practice to get it down. But once you’ve put the bike together a few times, you can hit the water in as little as ten minutes.
Piece together the frames and slide the pontoons into place. That’s it! You’re ready to hit the water!
Why We Love the Shuttle Bike
It Fits Into a Backpack
So obviously this has a lot of perks.
Number 1: Storage Space
You don’t have to dedicate half your garage for it like you would for a canoe or kayak.
Number 2: Ease of Transportation
Should you so desire, you can leave the Shuttle Bike in the trunk of your car, so it’s ready at a moment’s notice. In fact, after the initial set up, it only takes 10-15 minutes to get the Shuttle Bike set up and on the water.
Number 3: Versatility
While it’s amazing to take a canoe to a remote backwoods lake and relax the day away, it’s not always practical. Either you have to carry in your vessel, usually on foot, or you never make the trip.
But you can carry the Shuttle Bike via the corresponding backpack on a backwoods trip. You can finally go fishing and relax away the day on a remote mountain lake. You won’t even have to haul around your canoe.
You Use The Bike You Already Have
Most other boat bikes need a completely unique (and expensive) set up to function. But the Shuttle Bike works with the bike you already have.
There are a few exceptions to this. If you have a carbon-fiber frame, the Shuttle Bike won’t work. The carbon frames don’t handle the force of the fixed bracelets. All other bikes are fine.
Relatively. The Shuttle Bike weighs in at about 23 lbs. But when you compare that to a 50 lb canoe or a 40 lb kayak, the Shuttle Bike is pretty lightweight.
Its compact size and easy transportation make it perfect for backpacking lake trips.
There’s No Such Thing as Lake Pirates
Many people avoid biking in urban areas due to safety concerns. They fear getting hit by a car or mugged on a rural trail. But biking on a local lake avoids these threats, and you still get all the great health benefits of biking! It’s a win-win!
In case something punctures a pontoon, there’s a second chamber that keeps your bike from sinking. This gives you time to pedal back to shore. But if you want to wear a life vest in case, by all means, please do so!
Don’t Worry About Falling Off
Recovering from a serious injury? Worried about falling off? Getting on in age and you don’t want to risk your hips if you fall? Don’t worry!
Thanks to the pontoons, the Shuttle Bike can’t fall over. The bike stays perfectly balanced on the water.
But let’s say something crazy happens, and you do miraculously fall off your bike. There’s still nothing to worry about! You’ll land in the water, and not on the pavement.
So if you want to get back to biking but fear of falling is holding you back, the Shuttle Bike will keep you safe.
